AdBlue System Servicing & Repairs

An AdBlue warning is one of the few faults that can stop a modern European diesel from starting at all. If your Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Land Rover or Range Rover is showing an AdBlue warning light, an AdBlue error code, or a countdown that says the engine will not start in a set number of kilometres, Eurotech Autohaus can help.

We provide complete AdBlue system servicing, diagnostics and repairs for European vehicles in Perth, using the same factory diagnostic tools the dealerships use.

AdBlue Service Near Me: What We Actually Fix

AdBlue (also called Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF) is a urea solution injected into the exhaust to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions through the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst. The system that delivers it is more complex than the blue filler cap suggests: a heated tank, a level and quality sensor, a supply pump, a metering valve (injector), NOx sensors before and after the SCR catalyst, temperature sensors and a dedicated control module. When any part of that chain fails, the car logs an AdBlue fault, and on most European diesels that fault will eventually block the engine from starting.

Our AdBlue service covers the full system, not just a top-up:

  • AdBlue diagnostics using genuine Mercedes XENTRY, VAG ODIS and BMW ISTA, plus other specialist tools
  • AdBlue repairs including metering valves and injectors, supply pumps, tank and heater units, level sensors and NOx sensors
  • Clearing crystallised AdBlue from injectors, lines and the SCR catalyst
  • Resetting AdBlue warnings and engine start countdowns via guided manufacturer tests and online coding, where a repair has been completed
  • AdBlue system maintenance, fluid quality checks and correct refilling with ISO 22241 compliant AdBlue
  • Software updates for SCR and engine control units where the manufacturer has released a fix

Common AdBlue Problems in European Diesels

Most AdBlue issues we see in the workshop fall into a handful of categories. Some are cheap to fix and some are not, which is why an accurate diagnosis before replacing parts matters so much.

  • AdBlue crystallisation. Urea crystals form around the injector tip, in the lines and inside the SCR catalyst, particularly on cars that do a lot of short trips. Left long enough, the deposits block the metering valve, over-pressure the pump and partially choke the catalyst.
  • Faulty metering valve or AdBlue injector. A crusted or electrically failed injector cannot dose correctly, which triggers pressure and NOx efficiency faults.
  • Failed AdBlue pump. Often a secondary failure caused by a blocked injector. Logs low pressure codes and can start the no-start countdown.
  • Level, temperature and quality sensor faults. The tank sensor module reports level, temperature and fluid quality. When it fails, the car may report an empty tank when it is full, or flag poor AdBlue quality.
  • NOx sensor failure. NOx sensors are wear items on many BMW, Mercedes and VW Group diesels and are a very common cause of SCR efficiency faults.
  • Tank heater faults. AdBlue freezes at minus 11 degrees. The heater rarely matters in Perth, but a failed heater circuit will still log a fault and can trigger the warning.
  • Wrong or contaminated fluid. Diesel or water in the AdBlue tank, or AdBlue in the diesel tank, both cause serious problems and need to be dealt with promptly.
  • Software and control unit faults. Some AdBlue warnings are caused by outdated SCR software or a control module fault rather than a mechanical part.

AdBlue Error Codes and Warning Messages

If you have had the car scanned, these are some of the generic OBD codes that point to the AdBlue or SCR system on Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Land Rover and other European diesels:

  • P20EE: SCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)
  • P20E8: reductant (AdBlue) pressure too low
  • P20E9: reductant pressure too high
  • P204F: reductant system performance
  • P203B / P203C / P203D: reductant level sensor circuit faults
  • P202A / P202E / P2047 / P2048 / P2049: reductant tank heater and injector circuit faults
  • P2BAD / P2BAE: NOx exceedance, often paired with an engine start countdown
  • P229F / P2200 / P2201: NOx sensor circuit faults
  • P13DF00, P14031F, P20E823: common Mercedes-specific AdBlue codes. Read our Mercedes AdBlue fault case study for a real example.

On the dash, the wording varies by brand. Mercedes shows Check AdBlue, see Owner's Manual or AdBlue: engine start not possible in X km. BMW shows Check the SCR system or No restart possible in X km. Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda show AdBlue: no engine start possible in X km or Error: AdBlue, see owner's manual. Land Rover and Range Rover show Diesel Exhaust Fluid Low or DEF System Fault. Whatever the message, the important thing is to book the car in before the countdown reaches zero, because once it does the engine will not start until the fault has been repaired and cleared with manufacturer tools.

Our AdBlue Diagnostic and Repair Process

1) Full system scan

We connect the correct factory diagnostic platform for your brand and read every stored and active fault, not just the generic code. The manufacturer software also shows live pressure, temperature, NOx readings and dosing data that a generic scan tool cannot.

2) Guided testing and inspection

Manufacturer guided tests let us activate the pump, command the metering valve and check the sensors individually. We also physically inspect the injector, lines and exhaust for crystallisation, which is the most common root cause.

3) Repair, not replace everything

We repair or replace only the components that have actually failed, using genuine or OEM quality parts. Where an injector or pump has failed because of crystallisation, we also clean the affected areas so the new part does not fail the same way.

4) Reset, code and verify

Many European diesels will not clear an AdBlue warning or engine start countdown with a normal fault clear. Mercedes, for example, requires a guided XENTRY test and online SCN coding of the engine control unit. We complete the reset, carry out a road test and confirm the SCR system is dosing and NOx readings are back within range.

AdBlue Servicing for Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW and More

AdBlue systems differ between manufacturers, and the reset procedures differ even more. We service and repair AdBlue systems on:

AdBlue faults often overlap with other engine and electrical issues. If your car has multiple warnings, our car electrical services and engine servicing teams work alongside the AdBlue diagnosis so everything is resolved in one visit.

AdBlue Removal and AdBlue Delete

We are regularly asked about AdBlue removal, AdBlue delete and AdBlue removal price. It is important to understand that removing or disabling the AdBlue system on a road registered vehicle is not legal in Australia and can result in fines, a failed inspection and problems with insurance and resale. For that reason we do not offer AdBlue removal for road going cars.

AdBlue removal can be carried out for vehicles used strictly off road, such as dedicated motorsport or competition vehicles that will never be driven on public roads. If your vehicle falls into that category, contact us to discuss it. For everyone else, a properly diagnosed and repaired AdBlue system is a far better outcome than a delete, and in most cases it is not as expensive as people fear once the real fault has been identified.

AdBlue Service FAQs

Can I keep driving with an AdBlue warning?

Usually yes, for a while. Most European diesels give you a distance countdown. Once it reaches zero, the engine will not restart. Book the car in as soon as the warning appears rather than waiting for the countdown to run out.

My AdBlue tank is full but the warning is still on. Why?

This normally means a system fault rather than low fluid, such as a level sensor, pump, injector or NOx sensor fault, or a quality fault caused by contaminated fluid. It needs a proper diagnosis with manufacturer tools.

Can a generic scan tool reset the AdBlue countdown?

On some cars the countdown clears on its own once the SCR system is working again. On many, including most Mercedes models, the warning can only be reset through a guided factory test and online coding. We have the tools to do this.

How much does an AdBlue repair cost?

It depends entirely on what has failed. A sensor or injector is far cheaper than a pump and tank module, and a blocked SCR catalyst is at the upper end. We diagnose first and quote before any repair work is carried out.

Do you top up AdBlue during a service?

Yes. AdBlue levels and system health are checked as part of our servicing, and we only use ISO 22241 compliant fluid.
