If your Volkswagen or Audi key suddenly won’t turn in the ignition, it can feel like the car has completely failed without warning. The key goes in, but it will not rotate, the ignition will not switch on, and the car cannot be started.
This is a common issue we see across a range of Volkswagen and Audi models, including the Golf 5, Golf 6, Golf 7, Tiguan, Audi A3, and many other VW/Audi vehicles fitted with a key blade ignition switch.
In many cases, the problem is not the key and it is not the ignition barrel. More often, the fault is with the steering lock mechanism.

A Common VW and Audi Steering Lock Fault
The steering lock is part of the ignition and steering column assembly. When it fails, the key may become difficult or impossible to turn, leaving the vehicle unable to start.
Common symptoms include:
- Key goes into the ignition but will not turn
- Steering wheel feels locked
- Ignition will not switch to accessory or start position
- Vehicle cannot be started
- Issue may appear suddenly, even if the key was working normally before
Because the symptoms can feel like a key or barrel problem, it is important to have the vehicle checked properly before replacing parts unnecessarily.

We Keep Common Steering Lock Variants in Stock
This is a job we carry out frequently, so we keep the most common VW and Audi steering lock variants in stock.
That means we can often diagnose the issue, replace the faulty steering lock, and get the car back on the road as quickly as possible.
Why This Is Not Recommended as a DIY Repair
Replacing the steering lock is not a simple key or barrel swap. The repair involves working around the steering column, removing the airbag, removing steering components, and dealing with factory security shear bolts.
For safety and security reasons, this is not a job we recommend attempting at home. Incorrect removal can damage components, trigger airbag issues, or create further faults with the ignition and steering column assembly.
VW and Audi Models Commonly Affected
We regularly see this issue on:
- Volkswagen Golf 5
- Volkswagen Golf 6
- Volkswagen Golf 7
- Volkswagen Tiguan
- Audi A3
- Other VW and Audi models with a key blade ignition switch
If your key will not turn and the car will not start, it may be a steering lock fault rather than an ignition barrel or key issue.
